We hear about fluency when it comes to our students’ reading, but fluency in Maths is just as important. When our students are competent in recalling number facts, all of a sudden, maths feels ‘easier’, ‘lighter’ and you guessed it, more fun for them!

Who wouldn’t want to set their students up for this sort of success?

Number and fact fluency doesn’t happen after a few lessons. It is something that needs to be built upon over time.

That is why we love these games and resources so much. They allow for repeated practise, can be differentiated and kids love playing them.

We have made hundreds of fluency games over the years, but today we wanted to share 5 of our favourite ones. And, they are free for you to use! The ultimate aim is to share games that cater for various ages plus this makes differentiating games in the classroom so much easier!

1. Place Value Fluency

We need students to be confident and fluent in their place value skills and knowledge because it is a basis on which many other maths skills are developed. This UNO place value game is super simple (we have included a few different templates so students can work with different-sized numbers).

2. Addition Spinner Games

Spinner games are great fun for mastering addition (and subtraction) facts that kids will frequently use during Maths (and life). We have a version of spinner games for number bonds to 10 and number bonds to 20.

Teacher tip: To make a spinner you can flick a paperclip around a pencil.

3. Multiplication flip it

When teachers (or parents, for that matter) think fluency in Maths, they often jump straight to learning times tables by heart. There are many ways to work on multiplication fluency beyond repeating them over and over. Our Flip it games are wildly popular, and your students will love them too.

4. Division problems

Often we are so dedicated to working on multiplication, that we forget that students also need to develop division fluency too. We have designed these problems so they can used as ‘bus stops’ in your classroom (that just means you can stick them in the wall and students can access them as an exit ticket, fast finisher activity or even as a Maths rotation).

This resource includes sticky-note printables for students to pop into their Maths books to allow easy record keeping with minimal fuss.

5. Number of the day

If you are new around here, we love a Number of the Day. It covers an array of number skills that students need to work on constantly and master and you can use it day after day, week after week, term after term, and year after year in your classroom.

Perhaps the greatest things about our number of the day resource is your students can be working on different numbers at the same time – allowing for differentiation and student choice and voice.
